Benjamin Lincoln order book, 1779-1780.

The collection consists of the order book, Vol. 2, of General Benjamin Lincoln, while chief commander of the Southern Department, from January 3, 1779 - March 30, 1780. The orders deal mainly with general military administration and discipline of troops. Of particular interest are orders pertaining to marches or sieges at Augusta (Ga.), Savannah (Ga.), and Charleston (S.C.). The order book contains no entries between June 28 - September 13, 1779 and December 16-21, 1779.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
